In a statement, UNISFA said it has reinforced its security presence in the area and intensified engagement with community leaders in an effort to restore calm and prevent further violence between members of the Misseriya and Ngok Dinka communities.
“Our priority is to prevent further loss of life. We urge all community leaders to embrace dialogue and advance peaceful coexistence,” said UNISFA Force Commander Lt. Gen. Ganesh Kumar Shrestha.
Questions, however, remain about the effectiveness of security measures in the area. Amiet Market is located near a UNISFA sub-base, raising concerns among some residents and observers about how such a high casualty toll occurred despite the mission's presence.
UNISFA stated that it remains on the ground to protect civilians, prevent retaliatory attacks, and support dialogue between the affected communities.
Earlier, officials from the Abyei Information Ministry reportedly instructed residents not to share information about the incident, stating that only authorized authorities were permitted to provide details.
UNISFA has not identified the immediate cause of the incident involving members of the Ngok Dinka and Misseriya communities, who have historically shared land, grazing routes, and water resources in the Abyei region.
