Former Wife of Twic Mayardit Announces Warrap Governorship Bid

The ex-wife of musician Cherry Long from Twic Mayardit, Akuol Ajom, popularly known as Lady Kola, who is also an artist has announced her intention to run for Governor of Warrap State in the December elections, 2026.

Lady Kola said on social media that she is calling on women to come forward and support her, saying she is ready to lead Warrap State and represent women.

“My people, it’s election season. I see men preparing, but where are the women? We are 35%, and we must represent our 35%. I am calling on all women to come out and stand up for me,” Akuol said.

According to some interpretations of Dinka and Nuer cultural traditions, a woman who marries into another clan, community or region may not traditionally return to her home community to take a major leadership role, except in matters involving her immediate family, particularly where there are no men to lead.

With Akuol reportedly in a serious relationship with a Nigerian musician, questions have also been raised about what South Sudanese law says about a woman whose husband is a foreign national.

Some of her fans have questioned how she would manage the fragile security situation in Warrap State if elected, citing claims that she previously failed to manage Muony Twic Mayardit.

TMR could not independently verify the claim that Akuol failed to manage her husband, or whether the challenges in their relationship were mutual or both failed to manage themselves.
