The Warrap State government has condemned attacks in Tonj North County that it says left 60 people dead and 50 wounded, according to an official statement signed by the state Minister of Information and Communication Services, Hon. William Wol Mayom.
The statement, issued on August 10, 2026, said the first attack occurred at about 4:00 a.m. on August 9 at Ariec cattle camp in Akop Payam, Tonj North County. The government described the attackers as armed Nuer criminals and said the incident resulted in loss of lives, looting of property and the taking of an unspecified number of livestock.
The statement also reported what the government described as a simultaneous and suspected coordinated attack by subsections of Alabek and Juer against the Pan-Arik sub-clan of Akook Boma.
According to Minister William Wol Mayom's statement, the two separate attacks resulted in 60 deaths, while 50 people were wounded. Of those wounded, 17 have been transferred to Wau for specialized medical treatment, while the remaining casualties are receiving treatment at Athing-Puol Primary Health Care Unit (PHCU).
The Warrap State government expressed condolences to the families of those killed and solidarity with the affected communities. It described the violence as a threat to peace and stability in the region and said authorities in Warrap and neighboring Unity states would take immediate action to bring those responsible to justice.
The statement said Governor Bol Wek Agoth had directed the immediate deployment of the South Sudan People's Defence Forces (SSPDF), and other organized forces to the affected areas. According to the government, the deployment is intended to restore order, protect civilians and prevent further retaliatory attacks.
The government did not provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the clashes or independently verifiable evidence identifying those responsible.
Officials from the Unity State government did not respond to requests for comment from Twic Media Reports.
